A Day in the Life of Annamarie Burke - HR Officer

I joined Obelisk in 2016 and although I had previously worked in HR for a number of years prior to joining, Telecoms was a completely new industry for me. Who knew back then that talking about mobile towers, fiber cables, and wind energy would become second nature! The beauty of Telecoms is that it is a fast-paced, ever-evolving industry so we are always learning new things.


I usually start my day by checking my emails and reviewing my calendar to see what I have planned, even though as we all know sometimes those plans are gone out the window by 10 am. Mornings are quite hectic with preparing lunches and completing the school/creche run so I like to take 5 minutes out for me to refocus and prepare for the day.


The one thing about my role is that every day is different so when asked to describe a typical day, there really is no such thing. One of the most important parts of the role for me is ensuring that all of our employees are supported fully from their initial recruitment right through. Employee engagement is key especially with people based across various geographical locations however our approach to this is proven by winning the Most Effective Employee Engagement Strategy in the HR awards last year.


The pandemic has been a challenge for most people around the world, for me it was learning to work remotely. This significantly changed the way I worked as usually I would be on the road meeting employees and potential candidates face to face, however, Obelisk was a great support in ensuring we had all the equipment we needed to successfully work virtually. Throughout the time I have been working remotely, we ensured to stay in regular contact as a team and with the wider Obelisk team, although even now I still struggle with turning my camera on, you would think they didn’t know what I look like 😊 The supports that are in place and the approach to flexible working are excellent, this was highlighted even more throughout the last 18 months.


We were lucky to have been in a position to continue recruitment throughout Covid so remote onboarding was a massive change and something that we needed to get right. We implemented lots of initiatives to ensure those starting out were engaged and felt part of the Obelisk team.
One of my favourite things about the role is seeing people grow and develop within the company. Also never knowing what challenges the day ahead is going to bring keeps things interesting. It is refreshing to work on a diverse range of projects across different locations! Always getting to meet and engage with some truly inspiring people. My role (as I’m sure is the same for many HR professionals) can at times become that of an unofficial event planner, investigator, career advisor, mentor, peacekeeper, payroll advisor, and tax expert! The one thing I always say is nothing can surprise you once you work in HR however every so often something or someone proves you wrong.
