One of the most highly respected names in the Irish telecommunications sector, Stephen Brewer has been appointed to the board at international telecoms and renewable energy group Obelisk.
Stephen Brewer has been at the cutting edge of IT and telecommunications for over 30 years.
Brewer joins Obelisk as the company powers ahead with a number of recent contract wins across their mobile and fixed line business with such names as Three, Airband, SSE and Scottish Power as well as pioneering a number of tech innovations within the industry.
With a turnover of over 30 million Euros forecast for 2019, Obelisk employs over 300 people across Ireland, UK and South Africa.
Obelisk’s senior team has also been strengthened with the appointment of Jarlath Finnegan as Chief Executive Officer and Ronnie Delaney as Chief Financial Officer. Jarlath has also appointed a new executive team to drive the business forward.
Brewer was one of the founders of Apple Computer in the UK in the early 1980s and went on to introduce the UK’s first low-cost consumer mobile service, Cellnet Lifetime, in the 1990s.
During the same decade, he pioneered Ireland’s original prepaid service, Ready to Go as CEO of Eircell, the country’s first mobile phone operator later acquired by Vodafone where he served again as CEO before moving to head up Vodafone UK.
With Cable and Wireless, and later as CEO of Digicel, he was instrumental in helping transform the Caribbean’s telecoms market in the 2000s.
And in recent years Brewer has been a mentor for Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland and a roster of successful start-ups while continuing to identify growth opportunities across the telecoms arena.
In 2018, he joined Magnet Networks as Managing Director where he has brought his unwavering belief in the importance of selling, innovation and customer service.
Despite the uncertainty of Brexit, Obelisk is making a significant contribution to the telecoms industry and beyond:
- Rollout of broadband - delivering over 35,000 Connectable Homes to date with 50,000 in build across the UK & Ireland
- Mobile – rolling out 4G and 5G across Ireland and the UK and maintaining in excess of 3,000 mobile and fixed line sites 24/7 365 days a year
- Introduction of cutting-edge innovations including artificial intelligence to increase efficiency and ongoing adoption of security technologies to mitigate against increasing cyber security threats
"I’m delighted to be joining the Obelisk board, on the back of recent successful contract wins and at a time when we are working on some really exciting projects. The company is going from strength to strength" said Brewer.
Jarlath Finnegan, CEO said: "With Stephen and the new executive team in place, along with a talented workforce, I’m very much looking forward to developing the company and our team further, using my experience to ensure we continue to make significant strides, both locally, throughout Ireland, the UK and on a wider international platform."
“Stephen's extensive expertise and network of contacts will be vital to our future development and the strategic direction as Obelisk looks to expand both our national and international reputation further over the coming years.”
