We caught up with Finbarr O’Reilly to discuss how he is settling into his new role following his recent promotion to Head of Operations Irl and to find out more about his path to success. Finbarr joined Obelisk over 20 years ago and has held various positions in the company. Here is what he had to say;
I have been working in Obelisk for over 20 years. I started my journey on the 1st September 1997, the same day a Patsy McCabe actually. It has grown a lot since then as at that time there were only 7 employees in Obelisk!
I began my career here as a trainee rigger and worked my way up to the PICW of the team. Then, I progressed to a TX Installer, Deployment Manager, Maintenance Account Manager and finally to my present role of Head of Operations Ireland. Having started as a trainee and progressing up through the ranks I understand the issues that people are facing and have the knowledge and experience to help resolve them. This has really helped me progress in my current role and ensures that the work is complete to a high standard every time.
My days overall are hectic, I have 5 kids so getting them ready for school and creche means my mornings are mayhem. My morning starts around 6:30 am, when I get up I have a few minutes peace, so I’ll quickly browse through my emails to check if there were any major overnight faults or escalations. After this, I go for a quick 30-minute walk to clear my head and get ready for the day ahead.
The past year has had various challenges for everyone, however, despite this, I am really enjoying my new role and getting into the swing of things. One of the biggest challenges for me has been adjusting to the new norm of working from home as for over 20 years I have been travelling the length and breadth of the country. Obelisk has been a great support with this, ensuring that we have everything needed to continue to succeed.
Other challenges we face include Covid and seeing how it has and will continue to impact our business both directly and indirectly for the next 12 to 18 months. My main priority is to ensure that all accounts are profitable, client expectations are exceeded and projects are being delivered on time, and most importantly on budget. This comes down to ensuring that our account managers have the resources they require and that all our teams are safe and happy at work.
My favourite part of my role and indeed throughout my time in Obelisk is that no day or week are the same. You never get complacent or bored as there is always a new challenge and something new to learn coming around the corner.
