Turlough Hill Hydro Electric Station

alt alt alt

Scope: Civils, Steelwork, Rigging & Electrical

Client: ESB Telecoms

Location: Turlough Hill, Wicklow Mountains, Ireland

Requirements: Primarily as a result of Health & Safety concerns all existing operator owned equipment had to be relocated off the bridge out to the intake tower on the lake elsewhere on the same site with as little disruption as possible to all those concerned.

Solution: The existing antennas and dishes were strewn all over the bridge and a smart design was required in order to provide a safer means of access for operations & maintenance purposes. Obelisk Networks was contracted to carry out the complex task of planning, designing & relocating all equipment belonging to ESB Telecoms, Duchas, Mountain Rescue, Civil Defence, ESB Helicopter repeater, Vodafone, O2, Meteor and Sigma as well as installing new equipment on behalf of Tetra Ireland.

  • Two existing steel platforms on top of the bridge had to be strengthened to withstand the additional loading & safety systems proposed
  • Some of the existing equipment on the bridge had to be temporarily relocated to allow the work to be carried out in a safe manner
  • A new location was selected some 120m down the side of the mountain to locate a new raised steel grillage & compound thereby providing well needed shelter for O&M crews
  • It was necessary to cut in to the side of the hill in order to form the concrete pillars for the raised platform grillage
  • A new heavy duty cable gantry was installed up the side of the mountain along the existing stair case
  • A road crossing was required to include a large access/inspection chamber to allow for 1 5/8” feeder cables used by all operators
  • Strengthening steelwork was installed to the main platform c/w additional antenna/dish mount steelwork & heavy duty brackets
  • Ladder hooks were installed on the back of each pole mount for safe access and a permanent access ladder was installed to each platform c/w anti climb guards & Metreel fall arrest systems
  • A horizontal Latchways safety line was installed around the perimeter of each platform
  • A new heavy steel grillage was installed on the concrete pillars and painted green to offer minimal visual impact with regard to the surrounding area
  • Obelisk also supplied & installed a remote access weather monitoring station on site in consideration of the unpredictable, and often extreme, conditions experienced for the benefit of planned work

Obelisk Impact: The vast majority of work involved specialist rope access using IRATA technicians over open water adding to the complexity of the job. A safe method of work had to be developed in conjunction with ESB a result of which life jackets had to be worn at all times with a rescue boat on standby at all times.

Using highly experienced Project Managers & crews Obelisk Networks managed the site and supervised the work to ensure strict compliance with all Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental obligations and requirements. The contract was completed on schedule and within budget to the complete satisfaction of ESBT.
