I am pleased and delighted to announce that Obelisk have been awarded a GOLD MEDAL from RoSPA in recognition of our EHS submission for 2016.

This is a tremendous achievement, and what makes it special is that it’s our 5th GOLD award in 5 consecutive years.

This is a huge accolade and my sincere thanks go to Lisa Cavlan, Fiona Rudden and Dave Healy, all of whom put in a considerable amount of time and effort to ensure that our submission was successful .

Dublin – 25 April 2016: The BDO Development Capital Fund today announced a €3million investment in the Cavan-headquartered Obelisk Group, a specialist in service provision to the telecommunications and utilities sectors since 1996. The investment is backed by matching bank funding which together will drive the expansion in the telecommunications and power infrastructure sectors in both the UK and South Africa where the Obelisk Group is already well established.

The project is supported by the Department of Jobs through Enterprise Ireland.

The Obelisk Group was founded in Cavan in 1996 by two local entrepreneurs, Colm Murphy and Padraig Brady, to serve the newly emerging Irish mobile telecommunications market.  Since then it has delivered approximately 40% of the sector’s infrastructure.  The company expanded into power infrastructure in 2008, followed by the UK in 2009 and South Africa in 2010. The Obelisk Group now comprises 250 highly trained and experienced engineers and generates annual revenues in excess of €20 million with export revenues currently accounting for 40% of the Group’s revenues.

The BDO Development Capital Fund provides development and growth capital for established, mid-sized and profitable companies to assist them to achieve and accelerate their export-led growth plans. The combined €6 million investment will enable the Obelisk Group to take advantage of the investment in utilities in all three of the company’s markets as they grow to meet the expansion demands of new communication technology and renewable energy generation.

The BDO Development Capital Fund forms part of the Government’s Development Capital Scheme, an initiative under theAction Plan for Jobs through which a total of €225million is being made available to mid-sized Irish companies with significant growth potential. As part of this Scheme, €75million in funds from the Department of Jobs through Enterprise Ireland will be matched with €150million of private sector funding for investments in Irish companies through a series of different funds.

Five-year agreement with Obelisk Group enables Altitec to offer bespoke blade inspection and repair services to developers and operators working within key emerging markets

Wednesday 10th February 2016 – Altitec, the rope access blade repair and inspection specialist, has signed a five-year joint venture agreement with Obelisk, a provider of infrastructure services to the global renewable energy, telecommunications and power markets.  The deal enables the two businesses to deliver a range of high quality wind turbine blade and tower services to wind farm owners, operators and original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) operating in the South African market.  

The South African wind energy market has grown rapidly in recent years with 15 new wind farms totaling 1,200MW constructed in the last 3 years. The South African government has already committed to procuring energy from another 19 wind farms totaling 2,000MW, to help combat longstanding electricity shortages. 

This rapid growth has created demand for a repair, inspection and maintenance market that can service approximately 4,000 operational blades. In turn, the development of such a market will enable turbines to perform as expected, and provide a base of regional service expertise in the South African sector able to quickly address blade or tower issues and minimise wind farm downtime.

As part of the joint venture agreement, Altitec is working alongside Obelisk to provide a range of high quality, regionally specific blade and tower services, while also training new South African rope access technicians to international standards.

The range of core certified services delivered within the joint venture includes rotor-based inspections based on the principles for the monitoring of wind turbines, composite blade repairs, cleaning and monitoring of equipment and wind turbine tower corrosion protection and repair.

Currently the partnership has seen the creation and development of four dedicated teams of technicians that work directly with wider project management personnel on the ground.

“As key emerging markets move from early stage planning and development and into the commissioning stage, it’s critical that prospective wind power projects remain on track and stay within budget,” said Tom Dyffort, Managing Director, Altitec. 

“However, while the planning theory stacks up, the operational reality of working within new territories can quickly create unforeseen challenges.  Moreover, with many European manufacturers keen to safeguard and protect their equipment during the critical transport and commissioning stage, it’s essential that those technicians working with the equipment on the ground can provide absolute confidence and assurance.”

Dyffort added, “Given these challenges, our joint venture with Obelisk provides absolute reassurance for developers, owners, operators and manufacturers working within South Africa. Obelisk already has a very good reputation and strong track record in delivering quality services to the wind industry in South Africa, and we look forward to building on that base together.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Obelisk and Altitec will work to Germanischer Lloyd certification standards, training local technicians to help develop an established regional workforce for long-term operations and maintenance.

RoSPA Awards 2015 - Gold 3 years running

This is the third year in a row that Obelisk have been awarded a RoSPA Gold Award. Well done to all involved in this huge achievement!

Obelisk Group now NERs Accredited

Obelisk are pround to announce that we are now able to operate in the UK as a Lloyds Accredited ICP, under their National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS).

Independent Connections Provider (ICP)

Obelisk Networks (UK), part of the Obelisk Group are accredited to carry out substation design, installation, civil works and cable jointing up to 132kV.  This enables us to carry out Contestable Electrical Works in the Distribution Network Operators (DNO) franchised areas.

These Contestable Electrical Works tend to fall into two main categories:

  • 11kV/Low Voltage -  for connections to commercial developments; domestic sites and single connections
  • Major Works including Wind Farms – likely to be 33kV/66kV/132kV connections.

Obelisk Networks (UK) can offer, in addition to the Contestable Electrical Works, all the remaining on site works to connect a Single Turbine/Wind Farm to the UK Grid. This would start at feasibility studies including network impact assessments, wayleave and easement acquisitions and connections negotiations. The design and construction capabilities include electrical cabling, switchgear, protection, transformers (external turbine step-up transformers/auxiliary transformers) and substation buildings all up to and including 132kV.

RenewableUK Conference and Exhibition is widely recognised as the renewables event to attend in the UK , the event covers onshore & offshore wind, wave & tidal energy and small & medium wind systems. WMI, as usual, had a strong presence at the exhibition.

Renewables UK 2014

On stand were Martin Smith, Project Manager with responsibility for Business Development, Philip Beck, Business Development Consultant and Garry Smith, Project Manager. The event was well attended and was a useful platform for WMI to expand its market share, with new client links forged and existing links reinforced.
